Farsala — (2003-2006) Grades 6-10. Publisher: Who was Sorahb? Stories are told of a hero who will come to Farsala's aid when the need is greatest. But for thousands of years the prosperous land of Farsala has felt no such need, as it has enjoyed the peace that comes from being both feared and respected. Now a new enemy approaches Farsala's borders, one that neither fears nor respects its name and legend. But the rulers of Farsala still believe that they can beat any opponent. Three young people are less sure of Farsala's invincibility. Jiaan, Soraya, and Kavi see Time's Wheel turning, with Farsala headed toward the Flames of Destruction. What they cannot see is how inextricably their lives are linked to Farsala's fate — until it's too late.

Knight And Rogue — (2007- ) Grades 8-10. There will be six books in this series. Publisher: Need a Hero? You've got one in Sir Michael Sevenson. Although there hasn't been a knight errant in over two hundred years, this young noble has decided to revive the trade. He's found himself a reluctant partner in Fisk, a clever rogue who has been given the choice of serving as Michael's squire or going to jail for a very long time. Now Michael and Fisk are on a quest to right wrongs, protect the innocent, and make the world a happier place. It's not going to be easy. On their first attempt at rescuing a damsel in distress, they break a lady out of a tower, only to discover she was there for good reason: awaiting trial for poisoning her husband. Now the would-be heroes must find Lady Ceciel and return her to justice or be condemned themselves.

The Shield, Sword, and Crown — (2007- ) Ages 9-12. Crown of Earth is expected in 2010. Publisher: Weasel fumbled the cloth aside. It was a shield, steel plate over dark wood, with rotting leather straps. It looked old, and battered, and real. A former pickpocket, Weasel is the type of boy most people would avoid. Certainly, no one would ever trust him — except for one man. Justice Holis took Weasel off the streets, gave him a home, a job as his clerk, and a key to his house. Weasel's new life may be a bit boring, but for the first time someone actually cares about him. Now Justice Holis is the one in trouble. Arrested for treason, he will surely hang unless someone saves him — and that someone can only be Weasel. But what can one boy do? Not much without help. So with a mysterious girl named Arisa by his side, Weasel goes in search of the Falcon, the most dangerous bandit in Deorthas, but also the one person who would be able — and possibly willing — to stage a prison break. But Weasel's fate changes when he stumbles upon a shield. Could this be the one said to have been lost for centuries, the one that bestows power on whoever holds it? If so, Weasel, once a lowly pickpocket, could be the most powerful person in the land.

The Goblin Wood — (2003) Grades 5-10. Two sequels are forthcoming, but probably not until 2010. Publisher: When young hedgewitch Makenna witnesses the murder of her mother by their neighbors, she flees to the forest and forms an unexpected alliance with an army of goblins and leads an attack on the humans—who are now their common enemy.

The Raven Duet — This is a forthcoming young adult urban fantasy duology tentatively titled The Raven Duet. Hilari Bell says: "It's a Young Adult fantasy in a near future SF setting, and it's not quite like anything I've done before. The tone is a bit more edgy, urban fantasy style, but it's got a sexy lying shapeshifter instead of sexy vampires."

Stand-alone novels:

Publisher: Dayven has passed the test he wanted most desperately to fail — he's been proven to have the powers of a wizard. He had promised never to become one of the deceitful, disloyal sorcerers who believe in nothing and alter people's true destinies — but now he has no choice. Thrown into an apprenticeship with a roguish wizard, Dayven discovers that loyalty and trust are never simple, and wizards are more deceptive than he could ever imagine. The path that was once clear — his friendships, his future, his destiny — is now shadowed with dangerous twists and turns, and the world he knows must change forever.

Hilari Bell fantasy book reviews The Goblin Wood, The Wizard Test, The ProphecyThe Prophecy — (2006) Grades 5-9. Publisher: Perryn is a hopeless prince. His drunken father scorns his love of books, the master of arms ridicules his swordplay, and someone in the castle may be trying to kill him! But Perryn's books are his best weapons to stop the dragon that is destroying his kingdom-and his one hope of earning his father's respect. When he unearths a prophecy on how to kill the dragon, Perryn sets out to find the three things needed to make it come true: a unicorn, a true bard, and a special sword. But in a world where magic is disappearing, the only thing more absurd than pursuing a prophecy is believing any of these legends might still be found. With the king's men on his trail and time running out, Perryn learns that a scholar's job is not merely to seek the truth but to understand its worth-and that the power of the prophecy lies in his own hands.
